TUM to increase tuition fees for international students: Last year on 1 January 2023, Bavarian universities received a notable mandate through the ‘Higher Education Innovation Act‘: the ability to levy tuition fees on non-European Union (EU) students. With the help of this legislative change, all German institutes now have the option to enhance their financial resources and reinvest in academic and infrastructural development.

Who All Are Exempted from Paying TUM Tuition Fees?
As we are exploring TUM to increase tuition fees for international students, let us find out who all are exempted from paying tuition fees at the Technical University of Munich.
Now that we are aware of the ‘why’, let us look into the ‘who’ all will be a part of paying the tuition fees at the Technical University of Munich. Generally, all students who come from non-EU countries and will be enrolling in a new degree program at TUM starting from the winter semester of 2024/25 will be subject to tuition fees.
However, there are a few exceptions which you must take note of:
- All those students who are currently enrolled in a degree program at the TUM before the winter session of 2024/25 won’t have to pay the tuition fees.
- Students who have obtained their higher education entrance qualification within the German education system (e.g., Abitur) or have completed a degree program of at least six semesters at a German university are too exempt. (Note: The final examination at Studienkolleg doesn’t count as a German university entrance qualification.)
- Students who come in the EEA bracket i.e. EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway countries not required to pay tuition fees.
- Next, if you have stayed in Germany for a minimum of five years before starting your studies, or if one of your parents has resided in Germany for at least three years in the last six years and has been regularly employed, you are exempt.
- Lastly, tuition fees will not be charged to students with disabilities, asylum seekers, doctorate candidates, guest students, Studienkolleg attendees, students in exchange programs subject to special regulations, or students enrolled in degree programs culminating in state examinations, module studies, or other specialised studies.

What are the Revised TUM Tuition Fees?
Until now, you know who will exempted from paying the tuition fees at the Technical University of Munich. But, the question arises how much TUM to increase tuition fees for international students? Below we have mentioned the tuition fees for all students. The fees are announced in October of each year for both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs.
- Bachelor’s Program: Students pursuing a bachelor’s program will usually fall in the range of EUR 2,000 to EUR 3,000 per semester.
- Master’s Program: As for those pursuing a post-graduate degree will have to pay a tuition fee ranging from EUR 4,000 to EUR 6,000 per semester.

Other Munich universities, such as Ludwig Maximilian University, do not currently have any intentions to adopt tuition fees, while TUM continues with its pricing policy.
