This initiative has been taken by the college authorities after several students and stakeholders were having issues with a shortage in student housing.

Solutions to be Implemented

A task force has come together to come up with a solution regarding this issue. Here are all the steps that are to be implemented.

  • Redevelop on-campus townhouses known as “the Greens.”
  • Lease an apartment complex in downtown North Bay.
  • Plans to first renovate and then expand the accommodation.
  • Lastly, establish a homestay program, which would connect students with seniors in the community.

According to Shawn Chorney, vice president of strategic infrastructure, Indigenous and learner services, stated that they have planned several things. One of them is, is to revitalize 19 of the 39 townhouses on campus. Each of these units will get new windows, doors and insulation etc.

Another plan of the college to address the housing shortage is to lease a building downtown on Commercial Street. The building was formally used as a regional health unit.

In the end, Canadore students will be able to start renting accommodation by July. Apart from this, once the renovation for student accommodations will be completed, the next step is to expand the complex.

Chorney is also very excited about the college’s new homestay program which is meant to reduce social isolation. He further stated they are in the process of making a new matchmaking program where students will be matched with their seniors based on interests, needs and backgrounds.
