Study Abroad: New Records Are Set for Number of International Students in Australia

The number of international students in Australia has reached 700000 for the first time helping to drive the number of temporary entrants to 2.8 million. As of 29th February, there were 713144 international students in Australia. 

The former deputy secretary of the immigration department, this was a record up from 664178 in Septemeber 2023. The government’s policy is to pursue permanent rather than temporary migration.

In March the Albanese government begun to implement several key recommendations of the migration review was released in December. These recommendations included lifting English language requirements for student visas, new powers to suspend high risk education providers from recruiting international students also a new genuine student test will be introduced to further reduce the number of international students coming to Australia to primarily work than to study. 

Rizvi agreed with the government of Albanese noting the population in 2023 September was 26.821 million just short of the 26.981 projected in the Coalition’s 2019 budget. 

This test will be about their intentions to study, and their economic circumstances along with a declaration saying that they understand what a genuine student means. 

In February the Grattan Institute proposed to increase international student visa application fees to $2500 to pay for an increase in Commonwealth rent assistance.
