Study Abroad Important Documents for Foreign Students in America

International students who are planning to study in the US must complete the required paperwork before arriving on campus at the US university. Once the candidates are accepted into a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified school, foreign students will receive a Form I-20 from their designated school official (DSO). All the students who are planning to study in the US must have Form I-20 “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status”.

Students who want to bring any of their eligible dependents must also obtain a Form I-20 to the US. It is very important to note that the name on the Form I-20 and SEVP-certified school issued to the student will dictate the type of student visa they may obtain from the US Department of State.

Students and their DSO must both sign Form I-20. But if one of them is under the age of 18 , their parents must sign Form I-20 for them. This is an important document that students should keep safe as they will need it throughout the international student life cycle.

As of 1st July 2016, the redesigned Form I-20 is required for all nonimmigrant visa applications for entry into the US travel and applications for nonimmigrant benefits. The candidates must have the original Form I-20 at their visa interview.
