Permanent residents who are outside the country and do not have valid PR cards must get a PRTD to return to Canada. This card is also often good for just one entry into Canada. Candidates must apply for a new PR card when they return to Canada if they are permanent residents of Canada living abroad and require a PRTD.
Canada Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) – Eligibility Criteria
Candidates can apply for PRTD if they satisfy the below-given eligibility criteria:
- They should be permanent residents
- They must be outside of Canada and should have the intention to return by bus, train, airline, or boart
- They should not possess a valid PR card proving their PR status
Application Process for a PRTD
The candidates must submit a complete application form along with the necessary documents. In addition to this, they are also required to pay the application fees. Check below how to apply for a PRTD:
- Find out the country-specific forms and documentation required to apply using the IRCC tool.
- They must complete the necessary forms after determining whether the papers are specific to their country.
- Pay the application fee of $50 after completing all the required forms.
- Lastly, all the documents should be submitted through the portal of permanent residents for those who are applying online mode.
Processing Time of PRTD
Each country has different processing times. Generally, processing PRTDs may take up to 6 or 8 weeks to process the application. However, it may take even more than 8 weeks.
