The US Supreme Court has declared that institutions throughout the nation must alter their admissions procedures so that race is not taken into account. Higher education institutions will now need to find novel approaches to attract a diverse student body.
The universities in the USA, Harvard and the University of North Carolina (UNC) had their admissions policies overturned by the US court. As per the court, the admissions programs are meant to work in a better way.
However, Harvard estimates that 40% of US schools and universities take race into account when deciding who gets in. According to Harvard and UNC, while conducting individualised admissions assessments, race is just one of many considerations.
Moreover, affirmative action for the college admission process has long been supported by many institutions. It is a way to reduce racial inequality and exclusion. Additionally, it expands the talent pool at universities.
Whatsoever, with time the policies have failed to provide sufficiently focused and measurable objectives to justify the use of race. Inevitably, it employs race in a negative manner, involves racial stereotyping, and lacks meaningful endpoints.
Opportunity for International Students
Essentially, students willing to study at Harvard, UNC or any college in the USA, it’s an opportunity to hop on their study abroad journey. International students will also help the universities to widen their talent pool and also expand their careers.
Furthermore, some say need for remedial privileges is vanished, infringing on the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment’s promise of equal protection under the law.
Regardless of the motives or circumstances, some have labelled it as discriminatory. Critics believe policies unfairly favour one race, stating them as unlawful.
