PTE Daily Essay Topic: As global trade increases between different countries, many daily necessities are produced in other countries.

Q. As global trade increases between different countries, many daily necessities are produced in other countries. Such goods are usually transported a long distance. Do the benefits of this trend outweigh its drawbacks?

Ans: The rise of global trade has transformed the landscape of daily necessities. Many items used every day are now produced far from where they are consumed, travelling vast distances by ship, plane, and truck. Although this trend presents a complex picture, offering both advantages and disadvantages that require careful consideration, I believe that the drawbacks far outweigh the benefits of the situation.

On the positive side, global trade allows consumers to access a wider variety of goods at more affordable prices. Competition between countries drives down production costs, making everyday items more accessible. This is particularly beneficial for developing nations, where local production might be limited or expensive. Additionally, global trade fosters innovation. As countries specialize in areas where they have a comparative advantage, they develop new technologies and production methods, ultimately leading to a wider range of higher-quality products for everyone.

However, the long-distance transportation of everyday goods carries environmental consequences. The carbon footprint associated with shipping products across continents is significant, contributing to climate change. Additionally, the reliance on long supply chains can be vulnerable to disruptions. Political instability, natural disasters, or even pandemics can cause shortages and price fluctuations. Furthermore, the focus on cheap production can lead to the exploitation of labour and resources in developing countries. Consumers often have little information about the working conditions under which their necessities are produced, potentially contributing to unethical practices.

In conclusion, while there are both advantages and disadvantages to this situation, I believe that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. Although global trade offers affordability and variety, it is essential to mitigate its negative impacts.
