About Green Economy Scholarship Program

Short-term exchange opportunities at publicly financed Canadian colleges and universities are offered to students from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member nations through the Canada-CARICOM Skills Training for the Green Economy Scholarship program. The scholarships fund research in fields or programs associated with the green economy, including but not restricted to agroforestry, coastal and fisheries management, renewable energy, and climate-smart agriculture.

Eligibility Criteria

The conditions that students must meet to be eligible for the scholarship are listed below. 

• Citizens of one of the following CARICOM member states are required to apply:

Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

• A student who is full-time enrolled in a college or institute in an eligible nation or territory.
• Paying the institution’s tuition both at the time of application and throughout the exchange.

Students must also keep in mind that there are a few reasons listed below for which they are not qualified to apply. 

• Students who already have Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, or you are applying to do so.
• Already took part in a scholarship program supported by the Canadian government.
• Already enrolled in a program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate at a post-secondary institution in Canada.

Eligible Expenses

Selected students may spend their scholarship money on:

• Fees for obtaining a visa or a job or study permit.
• Airfare via the shortest, most practical route
• Health coverage
• Transportation, including public transportation passbooks and supplies needed for their study or research, excluding computers and other equipment.
• Housing expenditures, such as lodging, utilities, and meals

How Funding Works?

The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD), which is Global Affairs Canada’s legal name, will provide funding to Canadian institutions in the form of a non-negotiable contribution agreement. Canadian institutions will be in charge of allocating the funds to successful students through their internal procedures. If a student declines the scholarship, Canadian universities are required to reimburse DFATD for all cash received, including the administrative charge.

Application Process

Students interested in applying for the Green Economy Scholarship program must follow the below-mentioned steps:

• Review the eligibility criteria. 
• Check with the university’s foreign office to see whether there is an exchange programme in place with a Canadian post-secondary institution.
• To find out more about the application procedure and any prerequisites for admission to Canadian institutions, get in touch with your international office.

Applications must be submitted by the university on behalf of eligible students:

• Provide a programme coordinator responsible for processing applications.
• To submit a scholarship application on behalf of students, sign in or create an account on Momentum.
• Select the Canada-CARICOM Skills Training for the Green Economy Scholarship Programme under “For Non-Canadians” and press “Apply Now” after logging into your account.
• Follow the instructions for each item and provide information in the fields indicated as required.
• Upload every supporting document needed. Each file must be less than 5 MB in size and be in one of the following formats: pdf, jpeg, doc, docx, txt, or gif.
• Check the information before submitting.
• Select “SUBMIT” from the menu. For applications that you’ve submitted, you’ll get a confirmation message and a reference number.
• Print the form for the records.

Application Deadline

The application to submit online applications was 11:59 pm, 21 March 2023. However, applications are now closed for this year.

Documents Required

Universities and institutions must ensure that documents are complete as per the requirements. Applications will not be considered after the deadline. Students must also keep in mind that documents in a language other than English and French must be accompanied by a translation. Some of the required documents are listed below:

• Proof of Citizenship: Applicant’s passport or national identification card, which should include a photo and current dates. Documents such as a driver’s licence, permanent resident card, work permit, student card, health card, birth certificate, or baptismal certificate are not accepted as proof of citizenship. The citizenship evidence provided must come from the same nation or territory as the citizenship preference entered on the online application form.
• Signed Privacy Notice Agreement: A signed copy of the Privacy Notice Statement for non-Canadian participants, with the date within the previous six months.
• Letter of Intent
• Statement of Purpose from the Candidate
• Letter from the home institution attesting to full-time enrollment
• Supporting document from the parent organisation 
• Copy of the MoU or other contract with the partner institution that has been signed

Scholarship Selection Criteria

• The potential for quality in the proposed Canadian research or study
• Relevance of the proposed research or study for the candidate’s home country or territory’s green economy sector 
• The benefit to the home institution and peers benefit to the Canadian institution, supervisor, and peers strength of the links to be created through the proposed exchange 
• Rankings provided by the Canadian institution

Scholarship Conditions

Those chosen for the scholarship concur with the following conditions. The scholarship students received can be revoked if they don’t fulfill these requirements.:

• The Canadian institution’s definition of full-time study or research
• Avoid clinical research or training that involves caring for patients directly.
• During your time in Canada, concentrate on full-time study or research.
• After the scholarship period is up, return home to finish your education.
• There are no renewable and cannot be delayed scholarships.
• Scholarships are dependent on financing from the Canadian government.
• Both the Canadian school and the scholarship winner are exempt from taxes from scholarship payments.
• After the scholarship time, students are required to finish their education at their home institutions.
