What is a Chinese Student Visa?

A Chinese student visa is issued to candidates who come to China to pursue advanced studies or fieldwork. The visas will expire if the candidates fail to enter the country within 90 days of being granted the visa. Candidates are required to fill the application form offline and no documents will be accepted in online mode. Foreign students must issue the forms JW201 and JW202 from their enrolled schools. There are two types of Chinese student visas:

Check below the list of documents required to apply for a Chinese student visa:

  • A passport with a validity period of at least 6 months from the date of visa application
  • A passport-sized photograph with dimensions of 48mm * 33mm
  • Complete application form
  • An admission letter from a university in China
  • Complete JW201 or JW202 form issued by the State Education Ministry of China
  • An itinerary stating the dates of arrival and departure. Incorrect dates may fail to convince the visa offers that the candidates will return to their home country
  • Documents showing accommodation arrangements in Australia
  • Medical examination records are required by applicants for an F1 visa
  • Financial statements for candidates who are self-funded

There are no specific language requirements to study in China however, they may be required to provide proof of English language as most of the universities offer courses in English language. Check the most popular English tests accepted by the universities of China:

China Visa Application Process 

The step-by-step China visa application process is as follows. (Note: the video below explains the first step of the China visa application prcess-getting admission to a university in China)

  • Must receive an offer letter to study at a Chinese university. The university will send the student a JW202 or JW202 form along with an acceptance letter. 
  • Next, gather the essential documents, and apply at a visa application centre for China or a Chinese consulate. Submit the required documents along with the application form 
  • You will be required to pay an application fee between  ¥238 and ¥1,006.
  • Once, you have received the visa, travel to China and get a medical checkup done
  • Lastly would have to apply for a TRP or a temporary residence permit. Visit the Public Security Bureau (PSB) Exit and Entry Administration Office for the same purpose.

China Student Visa Validity 

The China student visa validity depends on the visa the applicant holds. The X2 visa holder is permitted to stay in the county for less than 6 months. The visa extension is possible. On the other hand, the X1 visa holder can stay in the country longer than 6 months. The visa holder can also apply for a Temporary residence permit. The residence permit can allow a person to stay in the country for 5 years.

Can I Work in China With a Student Visa?

The China student visa permits you to work for 8 hours. The work can be off-campus or on-campus. In total, you are not allowed to work more than 40 hours a week. Additionally. The universities will ensure that you have insurance to engage in work-study activities. There are certain things that you must keep in mind before working on a student visa. They are 

  • If you are working on campus you can work as a scientific research assistant, teaching assistant, or administrative management assistant. You can also work in the school’s public services.
  • Those who are working off campus must be: at least 18 years of age, have a valid residence permit, and have no criminal record, must be an undergraduate/graduate student or a research scholar. You must also ensure that you meet the academic progress and the attendance rate of the school.
