Feel-Good Bollywood Movies When You Are Homesick

Studying abroad brings with it a whole set of new avenues and opportunities. Students get to live in a new city, be independent and experience a new culture and setting. However, there are also times when students may feel homesick because let’s admit it, there is nothing like home.

During such times when you are missing home, a feel-good Bollywood movie acts as a trip down memory lane or simply a distraction from all the problems. Read on for our top recommendations.

Band Baaja Baraat

The escapades of Bittoo-Shruti gave us one of the most unexpected hits back in the day. The movie revolves around two wedding planners trying to navigate to the top of their industry while tackling feelings towards each other. The movie is light-hearted yet emotional and there is plenty of smart dialogue to keep a smile on your face. Also, if you are from the Delhi-NCR area, you will particularly enjoy the way Delhi has been captured in this movie.

Wake Up Sid

The first movie was for the Delhi-wallahs so it is only fair that we add a true-blue Bombay movie to the list. Wake Up Sid revolves around Ranbir Kapoor playing an entitled man-child who is forced to adult (sound familiar?). Great locations, an even better soundtrack and just overall wholesomeness make this movie a must-watch. Just grab a hot chocolate and put it on!

Dear Zindagi

Sometimes in life, all we need is expert advice. And it surely helps if this advice comes in the form of a therapist. But it gets even better when the therapist is Shah Rukh Khan. Dear Zindagi is full of teachings of love, compassion and embracing your true self. A must-watch for students who are far away from their families and looking for just that little bit of help. The characters and dialogues are well sketched-out and you will definitely be humming the title track after watching this.

Bareilly Ki Barfi

This list would be incomplete without a few comedies that will turn your frown upside down. Bareilly ki Barfi is a personal favourite because of how simple the treatment of the movie is. There is no glitter and glamour of a big masala Bollywood movie but there are some splendid performances and dialogues which will keep you smiling throughout. If that is not enough, there is the soothing Nazm Nazm. Lastly, a special shoutout to Rajkumar Rao’s transformation scene montage in this movie. It is hilarious no matter how many times you watch it!

Fukrey Series

Aaah the bakchod boys from Dilli! The escapades of Honey, Choocha, Laali and Zafar gave us one of the most unexpected movie memories. The Fukrey movies’ plotlines may not seem like much but it is the constant twists, turns and funny one-liners that make this movie an absolute riot. Apart from the main cast, there is also Richa Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi whose characters have become iconic. Watch these two movies to let go of your worries and simply laugh and have a good time!

And that’s our list. We hope students far away from their motherland can use these movies to bypass that feeling of homesickness and have a good time.
