About the Scholarship

The National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme is offered by the Government of India. The main aim of this scholarship is to uplift low-income students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Landless Agricultural Laborers, Traditional Artisans, and Denotified Nomadic, and Semi-Nomadic candidates. With this scholarship, selected students can pursue Master’s and PhD courses abroad.

Currently, the scholarship offers around 125 awards out of which up to 30% awards are for women candidates. Here is an overview of the awards for different categories:

Educational Qualifications

When you are applying for a scholarship, you need to have a certain educational qualification to become eligible. It should be remembered that the criteria differ according to the courses you are applying for.

  • For Masters courses, students must have scored at least 60% marks during their Bachelor’s.
  • For PhD courses, students must have scored at least 60% during their Master’s.

Work Experience

Your work experience is another major requirement to avail the scholarship. The requirements of work experience are different for your course. You need two years of work experience for a master’s and PhD and a minimum of 5 years of work experience for a post-doctorate degree.  

Other Criteria

Other than educational experience and work experience, there are some other criteria that make you eligible for the national overseas scholarship. These include:

  • Age– The age of the candidate should be less than 35 years till the 1st of April of the academic year. 
  • Family Income– The total family income of the candidate should not exceed RS. 8 lakh per annum in the previous financial year. 
  • Offer letter- Candidates with an unconditional offer letter from any of the top 500 universities or institutions according to the latest QS ranking will be selected for the first round. 
  • English Proficiency Test– While moving abroad, you need to clear the English proficiency tests like IELTS, PTE, GMAT, and GRE.

Selection Process

Getting selected can be a very tricky process for any scholarship. Any scholarship goes through a certain selection process. Read the detailed description of the selection process:

Step 1: The first step is that the screening committee will look into your applications and shortlist them based on your eligibility. This is why it is suggested that you fill out the application form carefully.

Step 2: The shortlisted candidates will be invited for a personal interview. This interview will be taken by the ministry itself. Now they will select 20 candidates based on the personal Interview. 

Step 3: The ministry will now award them with provisionally award letters to the selected candidates.
