| Tower 3 Uniworld Gardens Road Odisha -22897 12 October 2023 Dear Vaishnavi, It has been a long time since I wrote to you. It seems like yesterday was only when I shifted to Odisha. I wanted to write to you all about the incredible Durga Puja celebrations that I recently visited and experienced here in the state of Lord Jagannath. I know we have always talked about doing a Durga Puja tour together one day, so consider taking a preview of the wonderful festivities of this beautiful state. Vaishnavi, as Mahalaya dawned, the air of Odisha was filled with the sound of dhaakis practising with their mesmerising beats on the traditional beats of dhak drums. Within these days, the streets of the state are transformed into miles of decorations and stunning pandals with themes from mythological and nature themes of ideas. Colourful lights are draped across the building and installed with beautiful handmade idols of Maa Durga in temples and community pandals. The celebration of Durga Puja here is a 4-5 days long celebration filled with art, culture, chanting, food and more. Each morning, people during the festival wake up before sunrise to the chant of mantras. Here the priests perform the rituals before the idols. The pandals are bustled with devotees throughout the day. The intricate painting of jhoti chita is admitted as the artists made it entirely by hand using natural colours. In the evening, the air resonated with the sounds of dhak, bells and conch shells while in the evening aarti was performed in the glowing lights of diyas. Maha Saptami rituals make the celebrations even more special. On this day, the married women keep fasts and perform puja for the well-being of their sons and grandsons known as Kumar Purnima. The women also play the traditional game of puchi on swings, decorated beautifully with flowers and garlands. Vaishnavi, witnessing generations of women celebrating the festival with such joy is heartwarming. With all these rejoicing festivals it was the main day of Vijaydasmi and the time for the Sandhi Puja, which is marked as the departure of Maa Durga. In the evening we joined the magnificent processions accompanying the idols to the rivers and sea, with fireworks, drumbeats and chants. All the processions led to bidding her farewell until the next year. I can never forget the dancing style of local Odiyas which was rich with immense feelings of energy and oneness of the community. As I reflect now, the celebration of Durga Puja is the colours in my mind. I cannot imagine a better place and experience the infectious joy and spirit of Durga Puja in Odisha. | 117, 3rd Cross Road, Lady Curzon Building West Bengal -288921 11 September 2023 Dearest Shristi, As the festive season is on and I know how much you love to explore the vivid colours of celebrations, let me take the honour to take you along on the most incredible Durga Puja celebration that I witnessed in Kolkata, in West Bengal recently. Stepping out of the train I can feel the energised streets of Kolkata checked out for Pujo. It felt like I had entered a new world of celebrations for the 4 to 5 days. The entire city was transformed into a giant carnival, dedicated solely to commemoration, devotion and artistic sensation. The centre of attraction such as larger pandals sculpted by skilled artisans got my eyes stuck. More than 4000 of them were scattered across the different sites of Kolkata streets. Some idols were more than 10 storeys high, enriched with beautiful themes from mythology to the decorations. Every lane I turned revealed a new masterpiece more stunning than the last. From dawn to dusk, I went pandal-hopping, squeezing our way through a massive crowd for a glimpse of Maa Durga. Somewhere the themes of the pandals also included Lord Ganesha, Maa Durga and family in their divine glory. The streets were filled with special bhog stalls with mouth-watering kathi rolls, misht and more. We took a break to watch the concerts of Pandals featuring renowned musicians. The women dressed in traditional silk and men in Dhuti Panjabi and the children of course in their colours of cheering and dancing. The final day of Bijoya Dashmi drew the grandest crowds for Maa Durga´s visarjan processions. I walked alongside millions on the streets and was blown drowned out by the sound of conch shells, bells, dhak drums and cries of voices, ¨Asche bochor abar hobe.” With the magical commutative energy, we bade goodbye to Maa and wished for her journey back soon. Kolkata during the Durga Puja takes celebration and artistic festive spirits to another level. This journey has led me into a dazzling new world that has to be experienced.
