1. The Alamo Siege Ends in Texas (1836)

On March 6th, 1836, the legendary Battle of the Alamo was conducted after a 13-day siege in San Antonio, Texas. A small group of Texas rebels fought bravely but were ultimately defeated by the Mexican forces led by General Santa Anna. Despite the loss, the battle became a rallying cry for Texas Independence and inspired later victories in the Texas Revolution against Mexico.

2. Divisive Dred Scott Supreme Court Decision (1857)

The U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case on this day in 1857. In a controversial decision, the court declared that African Americans, whether enslaved or free, could not be considered American citizens. This ruling deepened divisions over slavery and was a factor leading to the Civil War a few years later. 

3. Malcolm X Splits from Nation of Islam (1964)

March 6th, 1964 marked civil rights leader Malcolm X’s departure from the Nation of Islam organization. A prominent voice for black empowerment, Malcolm X cited ideological differences as he broke away to form his own Muslim Mosque Inc. and later the Organization of Afro-American Unity.

4. Tragic Ferry Capsizing in Belgium (1987)

The British ferry MS Herald of Free Enterprise capsized on this day in 1987 shortly after leaving Zeebrugge, Belgium en route to England. The catastrophic accident, caused by human error and design flaws, resulted in 193 lives lost and led to major ferry safety reforms. 

5. Syrian Battle of Idlib Begins (2012)
