NCERT Class 8 English Honeydew Unit 4 Poem Summary: The Last Bargain
“The Last Bargain” by Rabindranath Tagore narrates a series of encounters where the speaker seeks employment. Initially, the King offers power, but it proves ineffective. Later, an old man offers gold, but the speaker rejects it. Thereafter, a fair maid offers a smile, which turns into tears. Finally, the sun sets, and a child, playing with shells, symbolically hires the speaker with nothing.
Through different employment offers, the poem reflects a progression from materialistic offers to a simple, genuine gesture. Ultimately, the child’s innocent act makes the speaker a free man.
With different offers, Tagore explores themes of value, sincerity, and the essence of true freedom. Thereby, suggesting that genuine connections and simplicity hold more significance than material wealth or power. Thus, the poet asks readers to reflect on the deeper meaning of human interactions and the pursuit of genuine happiness.
