APAAR ID- ADHAAR FOR EDUCATION

The Union Government has taken the initiative to revolutionise the education policy by introducing the APAAR ID for students. The full form of APAAR is- Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. This is based on the core vision of the National Education Policy for a connected and multidisciplinary learning system. This ID will be based on the idea of ‘One Nation, One Student ID’.

What is an APAAR ID?

The APAAR IDD is a unique, lifelong digital academic identifier which is being rolled out by the Ministry of Education, India (MoE). It is a 12-digit unique number assigned to each student in India (both government and private education systems) that will stay with them throughout their journey.

NOTE: Think of it like a digital academic passport; once you get your APAAR ID, all your records for school, college, etc., can be linked to it, making future steps (transfers, admission, jobs) easier.

Goal Behind APAAR

The goal behind the same is to make education hassle-free and, at the same time, reduce the need for students to carry physical documents. This initiative was launched as part of the National Education Policy 2020 by the Education Ministry. Mr Anil Sahasrabuddhe, the Chairman of the National Education Technology Forum, explained, “It’s about giving states the tools to enhance their performance.” He also said, “The vision is to create a positive change, allowing the state government to track literacy rates, dropout rates, and more, helping them make improvements.”

Who is Eligible/ Who Needs to Get an APAAR ID?

The APAAR ID is designed for all students studying in India, covering every educational level from pre-primary and school to college and higher education. It applies to learners in both government and private institutions, ensuring complete inclusivity across the academic system. Once created, the APAAR ID stays with the student for life, maintaining a permanent record of their educational journey. It is also integrated with key national platforms such as the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), DigiLocker, and other government education databases to enable easy access, verification, and portability of student records.

How to Get a Permanent Education Number (PEN)?

A Permanent Education Number (PEN) is a unique ID given to students in some countries or regions for keeping track of their educational records. If you need a PEN, here’s a simple guide to help you:

  • Ensure you are enrolled in an educational institution that issues PENs. Usually, schools, colleges, or universities handle this process.
  • Reach out to your school administration or registrar’s office. They will guide you on whether you already have a PEN or need to apply for one.
  • You may need to share some personal details like Full name, Date of birth, Address, and Enrollment details
  • Some institutions might ask you to fill out a form, either online or offline. They will submit your details to the education authority responsible for issuing PENs.
  • Once processed, your school or the education department will give you your unique PEN. Keep it safe for future use!
  • In the case of minors, parents will have to sign their consent form, hence allowing the Ministry to use the student’s ADHAAR number for authentication with UIDAI.

Note: Registering for the creation of an APAAR ID is a voluntary choice and isn’t mandatory.

For you (as a student or a parent of a student), it means fewer hassles with certificates, smoother transitions between institutions, and a lifelong academic identity that helps in admissions, jobs, skill recognition and more.

However, since it is still being implemented across states and institutions, it’s wise to stay proactive; ensure your data is correct, engage with your institution for the process and keep documentation ready.
