APAAR ID- ADHAAR FOR EDUCATION

The Union Government has taken the initiative to revolutionize the education policy by introducing the APAAR ID for students. The full form of APAAR is- Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. This is based on the core vision of the National Education Policy to a connected and multidisciplinary learning system. This ID will be based on the idea of ‘One Nation, One Student ID’.

Goal Behind APAAR

The goal behind the same is to make education hassle-free and at the same time reduce the need for students to carry physical documents. This initiative was launched as part of the National Education Policy 2020 by the Education Ministry. Mr. Anil Sahasrabuddhe, the Chairman of the National Education Technology Forum, explained, “It’s about giving states the tools to enhance their performance.” He also said, “The vision is to create a positive change, allowing the state government to track literacy rates, dropout rates, and more, helping them make improvements.”

What is Permanent Education Number (PEN)?

Creating a unique identifier for all students in India is one way of addressing this challenge. now this identifier could be called APAAR ID (National ID) or a Permanent Education Number (PEN).

PEN Number would be unique and would be assigned to each student at their birth. This number would remain same all throughout their academic career.

The Student’s PEN will be recorded and printed on the documents mentioned below:-

  • SSC Memo (10th Class Memo)
  • SSC Hall ticket (10th Class Hall Ticket)
  • School Attendance Registers.
  • Transfer Certificate.
  • Record Sheet.
  • School Admission Registers.

Benefits of a National ID or PEN

There are a lot of potential advantages to introducing National ID or PEN in India. Some of them are mentioned below:-

  • It would reduce the paperwork for students when they are enrolling in a new school or any other educational institution.
  • The tracking of students’ progress would become much easier for parents as well as for the government which would hence enable accountability and transparency in the education system.
  • This ID would allow the students to track their own performance across various different schools and institutions.
  • This would also facilitate them to switch schools or institutions much more easily.

Eligibility for APAAR ID or PEN

Every student in India, irrespective of their age, education level, etc will be eligible for PEN or an APAAR ID.

NOTE:- APAAR ID or PEN would contain sensitive information, hence, students should protect the same and not share it with anyone and retain its confidentiality.

Uses of APAAR ID

  • For each student, APAAR ID will be unique and will work as One Nation, One Student ID.
  • It will give identity to the students across all purposes and will make it easy for students to transfer from one institute to another.
  • It will be a gateway for accessing DigiLocker ecosystem where all the achievements of students will be stored digitally.
  • APAAR ID will be useful in monitoring different students such as dropouts, etc and hence, it will mainstream them.
  • APAAR ID will be used for a lot of scenerios such as:- admissions, Scholarship disbursement, Entrance tests conducted by NTA, Issuing of Awards, recognition, etc.

How to Get Permanent Education Number (PEN)?

  • Students will have to provide some very basic information like their name, date of birth, gender, age, etc. 
  • This information will then be used to verify their respective ADHAAR. 
  • After that, students will need to sign a consent form, which, they can choose to either accept or even decline.
  • In the case of minors, parents will have to sign their consent form, hence allowing the Ministry to use the student’s ADHAAR number for authentication with UIDAI.

Note: Registering for the creation of an APAAR ID is a voluntary choice and isn’t mandatory.
