Fumio Kishida’s Political Career

Kishida’s political career began when he became the secretary for his father in 1987. In 1993, he was elected to the House of Representatives for Hiroshima’s 1st District. 

  • He held multiple ministerial positions between 1993 and 2011, including overseeing the affairs related to Okinawa, northern territories and space policy.
  • By 2012, he had earned a reputation as Japan’s foreign minister, a position he held until 2017.
  • Kishida as a minister also negotiated an agreement with South Korea with Comfort Women Agreement (2015), to compensate women taken as military sex slaves during WWII.
