History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in the year 1882, Waseda University is a private institute offering quality education in Japan. On 2 September 1902, the institute was granted university status. The department of literature was established in 1890, the department of education in 1903, the department of commerce in 1904,and the department of science and engineering in 1908. Waseda University received formal government recognition as a university under the terms of the University Establishment Ordinance in 1920.
After suffering the after-effects of World War II, the university re-started in 1949. Now, this university has built strong affiliations with leading global organizations such as Korea University, Italy Japan Foundation, University of Bonn, and Peking University. Waseda University ranks #801-1000 in Times Higher Education 2022 and #520 in the US News & World Report 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Waseda University provides quality education in the areas of political science, economics, law, science, and international research and education. In 2020, Waseda Business School was awarded the AACSB international accreditation, after the EQUIS accreditation was awarded in 2019. This makes Waseda Business School one of the two business schools in Japan that have been accredited by both AACSB and EQUIS. The notable alumni of the institute are Yasuo Fukuda, a politician, Haruki Murakami, a writer, Shizuka Arakawa, a figure skater and many CEOs, including Tadashi Yanai, the CEO of UNIQLO, Nobuyuki Idei, the former CEO of Sony, Takeo Fukui, the former president and CEO of Honda, Norio Sasaki, the former CEO of Toshiba, Lee Kun-hee, the Chairman of Samsung Group.

The institute has a total of 47,959 students out of which 39,382 are undergraduates, 8,577 are postgraduates at the institute with about 5,461 academic faculties. Waseda University is home to over 5,000 international students, strengthening its reputation as a top destination for study abroad in Japan. Waseda University gave admission to its first international students in 1884.
