CJI Full form

The CJI full form is the Chief Justice of India. The CJI is the senior judge of the supreme judicial authority of India which is the Supreme Court of India. The Chief Justice of India is the highest rank in the Indian Federal Judiciary. Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud is the current CJI of Indian. If the current CJI approaches retirement, he recommends the candidate to the Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs to take the position next. The recommendation is next passed to the Prime Minister who advises the president to appoint the CJI.

What are the Eligibility Criteria to Become a CJI?

The following are the eligibility criteria one must meet to become a CJI:

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India
  • Eligible candidate must have served as the judge of the High Court or of two or more such courts in succession for a tenure of 5 years or an advocate of a High Court or of two or more such courts in line for at least ten years.
  • The candidate must be of proven integrity and ability
  • Age of the candidate must not be below 45 years

What are the Roles and Responsibilities of a CJI?

The following are the roles and responsibilities of a CJI:

  • A CJI is responsible for assigning the cases to other judges and appointing the constitutional benches.
  • CJI is the point of reference for a judge in case they require a larger bench of judges to look over a case.
  • The CJI also serves as the president of India in case the position of both president and vice president are vacant.
