The full form of SMILE is Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise. It was launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on 12 February 2022. Interestingly, this all-inclusive scheme consists of two sub-schemes including one for transgender people and the other one for people who are engaged in begging. In simple words, the SMILE scheme aims to elevate poverty by providing opportunities for a sustainable livelihood to marginalized individuals.

What is the SMILE Scheme?
SMILE is an umbrella term that refers to a comprehensive scheme that includes numerous effective measures. It prioritizes the implementation of welfare measures such as easy access to medical facilities, rehabilitation, counseling, skill development, education, and so on. For this, SMILE receives the required support from State Governments/UTs/Local Urban Bodies, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), and others.

Categories of SMILE
As mentioned earlier, SMILE, or Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise has two sub-categories:
1. Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Welfare of Transgender Persons
- It provides scholarships to transgender students from the 9th grade and up to post-graduation.
- SMILE provides skill development, and healthcare services, and establishes shelter homes called Garima Greh for individuals.
- It also sets up Transgender Protection Cells.

2. Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of Begging
- Surveys and identify people who are engaged in begging.
- It urges people to avail the benefits of the services provided in shelter homes.
- It establishes shelter homes.
- SMILE also undertakes rehabilitation and resettlement of individuals.
SMILE Scheme Eligibility
- It is applicable to individuals belonging to the SC community.
- The annual income of the family should be less than Rs. 3 Lakh.
- The person can be an immediate relative of the deceased person who was the primary bread earner and died due to COVID-19.
- The applicant should also present certain documents as required.
