How is the President of India Elected?

The President of India is recognized as the Head of State of the Republic of India. The President of our country carries out the role of the Head of the Executive as well as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces. Moreover, the office of the President was first developed after India became a Republic on the 26th of January 1950 and its Constitution was implemented. Additionally, Droupadi Murmu is the 15th and current President of India, since 2022. No direct elections are held for the Indian President. The President is rather elected by the appointed Electoral College. Moreover, this Electoral College comprises the elected members of:

2. State Legislative Assemblies 
3. Legislative Assemblies of Union Territories

Who is Excluded from Participating in the President’s Elections?

Furthermore, the people listed below do not have a Role in the Election of the President of India:

1. Nominated Members of Rajya Sabha (12 members).
2. Nominated Members of State Legislative Assemblies.
3. Members of Legislative Councils (both elected and nominated) in bicameral legislatures.
4. Nominated Members of Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry.

How long does the President serve in office?

Upon election, the President’s term lasts for five years. They remain in office beyond the completion of 5 years if no new election has occurred or a new President has been elected by that time. Additionally, there is no limit on the number of times the President can be re-elected.

Qualifications to Become the President of India

Here are a few eligibility criteria that you must fulfil to take part in the President of India election process: 

• The candidate should be a citizen of India.
• They should be a minimum of 35 years old.
• They should have qualified the eligibility criteria to become a member of the Lok Sabha.
• They should not be holding any office of profit that comes under the State government, Central government, or any public authority.
