NAEP Full Form: NAEP stands for National Adult Education Programme. The National Adult Education Programme (NAEP) was a programme launched on October 2, 1978, in India to eradicate illiteracy through a project approach. It was a massive programme aimed at educating 100 million non-literate adults in the age group of 15-35 years within a time frame of five years.

Recognising the significance of Adult Education in a free India “Without Adult Education and Adult Literacy, it is not possible to have the range and speed of economic and social development that we require,” V.K.R.V Rao remarked. Adult education and adult literacy should be prioritised in any economic and social development project.”
It is obvious that the Adult Education initiative is welcomed in order to help the illiterate masses of India comprehend the true meaning of a democratic way of life.
In this regard, the National Policy Statement on Adult Education (1977) states that while a concerted effort must be made to universalize elementary education up to the age of 14, educational facilities must be extended to the adult population in order to remedy educational deprivation and enable them to develop their potential.

Objectives of NAEP
- To enhance the country’s literacy rate among people from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
- To raise awareness among illiterate adults about their helplessness as a result of their lack of education.
- Improving people’s functional capabilities in their employment or vocations.
- To make adults self-sufficient.
- Making education relevant to adult work and life situations.
Activities Performed by NAEP
- Creating a favourable climate for the NAEP launch.
- Development of comprehensive plans for each state and territory.
- Creating the administrative structure that is required.
- Identifying various agencies, both official and non-official, to participate in the plan.
- Building ability in all states to create diverse and need-based teaching and learning resources.
- Training methodology development and manual preparation for various adult education officials.
- Involving different types of people in instructional duty, such as school teachers, students, jobless rural young, retired employees, volunteer social workers, and so on.
- Putting together a follow-up programme to ensure the achievement of adult literacy.
