The third Battle of Panipat was fought on January 14, 1761. It was a bloody and decisive battle between the Maratha Confederacy and the invading forces of Amad Shah Durrani aka Ahmad Shah Abdali.
- The Maratha Empire had become a dominant power in India by the 18th century. However, internal conflicts and power struggles weakened the empire, leading to the rise of Durrani who saw an opportunity to invade India and assert his dominance.
- In 1759, the Marathas captured Lahore from the Durrani Empire, resulting in Ahmad Shah Abdali’s retaliatory invasion.
- The Marathas were led by leaders like Sadashivrao Bhau, and Vishwasrao (the son of Peshwa), who were killed in combat action.
- The Marathas initially had the upper hand, but due to a series of strategic blunders, the tide turned in favour of the Afghan forces.
- A devastating defeat was suffered by the Marathas, eventually losing a significant portion of their army, including many important commanders.
- Ahmad Shah Abdali emerged victorious, dealing a severe blow to the Maratha Empire and halting their further expansion.
The Peshwa also was in shock after hearing about the loss of his son, resulting in Abdali’s annexation. Abdali however, took control till Sutlej, but sent a letter to reinstate the rulers back to the throne.
