The Mughal Empire
The Mughal Empire, on the other hand, was a vast and powerful empire that had extended its influence over most of the Indian subcontinent. Ram Singh, the Mughal commander who led the invasion of Assam, was determined to bring the region under Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s control and increase the empire’s territorial reach.
The Battle of Saraighat took place near the city of Guwahati, a crucial trading hub along the Brahmaputra River. The Ahom forces, led by Lachit Borphukan, utilized a fleet of indigenous warboats known as “paikes” to outmaneuver the larger Mughal navy.
Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Ahom forces, under the leadership of Lachit Borphukan, emerged victorious in the Battle of Saraighat. The Mughal Empire suffered a humiliating defeat, and their ambitions of annexing Assam were thwarted by the fierce resistance of the Ahom Kingdom. The Battle of Saraighat is celebrated as a symbol of Assamese resilience and valour, with Lachit Borphukan hailed as a national hero for his role in defending his kingdom against the Mughal onslaught.
