History of Bangalore Fort

The historical timeline of the fort is –  

  • 1537: Kempe Gowda I, the founder of modern Bangalore, builds a mud fort and establishes Bengaluru Pete (capital) around it.
  • Legend says Kempe Gowda’s daughter-in-law sacrifices herself to complete the southern gate.
  • 1637-38: Bijapur Sultanate attempts to capture the fort under Rustam i Zaman. Kempe Gowda surrenders the fort to avoid battle.
  • 17th-18th centuries: The fort is enlarged under Chikkadeva Raya Wodeyar (1673-1704).
  • 1761: Hyder Ali strengthened the fort with stones. The fort underwent several modifications and expansions under the rule of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in the 18th century.
  • Tipu Sultan repairs the fort after damage during the Anglo-Mysore War.
  • 1791: British East India Company captures the fort during the Third Mysore War under the supervision of Lord Cornwallis.

Features of Bangalore Fort

  • Bangalore Fort had nine large gates and wide moats.
  • The fort boasts of the present Victoria Hospital and is comprised of gates which are now demolished. Out of these gates, only Delhi Gate is standing tall.
  • It encompasses an area of 120 acres and is built in a unique octagonal shape.
  • The fort houses several historical structures, including the Bangalore Fort Church, Fort Cemetry and Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace.
  • Kote Venkataramana Temple is present inside the temple.
  • The architecture of the fort reflects a blend of Hindu, Islamic, and British styles, showcasing the cultural diversity of the region.
