FSC Full Form: The Full Form of FSC is Forest Stewardship Council. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible forest management worldwide. FSC has risen to become the world’s most regarded and widely used forest certification system since its inception in 1994.

Structure of FSC

FSC’s decision-making bodies are divided into three levels: the General Assembly, the Board of Directors, and the Executive Director.

• The FSC General Assembly, which meets every three years, is made up of the three membership chambers and is the highest decision-making body in the organisation. The last General Assembly was held in 2014. Every member has the right to attend, propose and vote on motions. The General Assembly provides an opportunity for everyone to contribute, learn, form new alliances, exchange information, and explore economic prospects to achieve a better future for the woods.
• The FSC Board of Directors is answerable to the organization’s members. It is made up of nine elected members and advocates of the FSC. Each sub-chamber of the General Assembly elects one member to the board of directors.
• The Executive Director manages FSC on a daily basis, assisted by a multi-cultural professional team in the FSC International Centre. He or she reports to the FSC Board of Directors.

Objectives of FSC

The stated purpose of the FSC is to “promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable forest management worldwide.” To that purpose, the organisation has issued a global strategy with five objectives:

• Globally responsible forest management is being advanced.
• Ensure that all people have equal access to the benefits of FSC systems.
• Ensure the FSC system’s integrity, trustworthiness, and transparency.
• Create commercial value for items derived from FSC-certified forests.
• Strengthen the worldwide network to achieve goals 1–4.

Members of FSC

FSC has over 1200 members, including:

• Several international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as the World Wide Fund for Nature and Oxfam/NOVIB; 
• Smaller, national NGOs, often with a conservation or environmental focus, such as the US Wildlife Conservation Society, the Spanish Ornithological Society, and Cameroon Environmental Watch; 
• Civil society organisations with a community development focus, such as the Foundation for People and Community Development (Papua New Guinea) and the Mountain Association for Community Development;
• Labour Unions and workers’ organisations, such as the Latvian Wood Branch Labour Union and the Swedish Forest and Wood Trade Union.
• Organisations dedicated to forestry research, such as the Forestry Science and Research Institute (Brazil);
• KPMG Forest Certification Solutions (Canada), Forest Eco Certification (India), and Wood Certification Ltd (India) are examples of certification organisations.
• Private forestry, lumber, and paper enterprises include Mondi (South Africa), Sun Wood Industries (Thailand), and IKEA (Sweden)
