1961: Portuguese Territories Merged to Create the Union Territory
On 11th August 1961, the former territories of Portuguese – Dadra and Nagar Haveli were merged and created the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Before, India was controlled by various countries of Europe and did trade as well as acquired the areas. 

What Happened Around the World on August 11?

1885: Money raised for Statue of Liberty
$100,000 was raised in the US for the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. Pulitzer and the New York World were finally able to announce in August 1885, that the final $100,000 for the statue’s pedestal had been raised.

1919: Green Bay Football club
Green Bay Packers football club was founded by George Calhoun and Curly Lambeau on August 11, 1919, which was named after sponsor Indian Packing Company.

1928: MLB Victory
NY Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell, who was the future Baseball Hall of Fame, noted his first MLB victory, a 4-0 win from the Philadelphia Phillies at NYC. 

1974: PGA Championship Men’s Golf
Lee Trevino won the first of his 2 PGA C’ships, 1 stroke ahead of defending champion Jack Nicklaus. Lee Buck Trevino is an American retired professional golfer who is regarded as one of the greatest players in golf history. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981.

1984: Defending the Olympic title
Sebastian Coe, who was with Steve Cram, in the 1,500m at the Los Angeles Olympics became the one and the only man to defend his Olympic 1,500m title. 

1989: Partial rings of Neptune
Voyager 2 discovered two partial rings of Neptune. Voyager 2 is a space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977, to study the outer planets and interstellar space beyond the Sun’s heliosphere.

2008: Airbnb founded
Airbnb was founded by Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk. Airbnb Inc. is an American company that operates an online marketplace for lodging, primarily homestays for vacation rentals, and tourism activities.

A Dutch physician and bacteriologist who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1929 was born in Nijkerk, Netherlands.  

1897: Enid Blyton
An English children’s writer, 5th most popular author in the world of ‘Famous Five’ and  ‘Secret Seven’ was born in London, England. 

1921: Alex Haley
An American writer was born in Ithaca, New York on August 11, 1921. 

1943: Pervez Musharraf
A Pakistani general and politician, 10th President of Pakistan (2001-2008) was born in Delhi, British India. 

1950: Steve Wozniak
An American pioneer of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and co-founder of Apple Computer was born in San Jose, California. 

1967: Joe Rogan
An American television host, comedian, and podcaster was born in Newark, New Jersey.

1983: Chris Hemsworth
An Australian actor of ‘Thor’ and ‘Avengers’ was born in Melbourne, Victoria.
