AICPA John L Carey Scholarship 2023

AICPA John L Carey Scholarship Award is awarded to liberal arts and non-business degree holders pursuing graduate studies in Accounting and the Certified Public Accountant licensure. This award aims to encourage students with minor or no previous accounting education to consider professional accounting careers.

The AICPA John L Carey Scholarship Award payments are sent directly to the student financial aid office to be utilised towards payment of tuition fees and other expenses directly related to pursuing a degree. This award is non-renewable and past recipients shall not re-apply.

Educational Requirements

There is a long list of eligibility requirements that an applicant must meet to apply for the AICPA John L Carey Scholarship.

An eligible applicant must:

  • Have liberal arts or other non-business undergraduate degrees from an accredited institution in the United States before admission to a graduate accounting program.
  • Have not achieved more than 12 credits in accounting during their undergraduate program.
  • Not have active participation in a graduate accounting program.
  • Be planning to study a graduate-level degree in accounting or an accounting-related major beginning in the fall of 2022-23. 
  • Be planning to pursue the Certified Public Accountant licensure (not presently be a CPA).
  • Be attending a private or public, not-for-profit four-year university/college in the United States or territories for the entire academic year 2022-23.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time graduate-level student, with nine semester hours or equivalent for the entire 2022-23 academic year. 
  • An exception may be given if you have plans to participate in an internship program.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Be an AICPA Student Affiliate member or must have submitted a new member application.
  • Have U.S. citizenship or be a permanent resident (green card holder)
  • Have some financial need (not already be the recipient of full or partial scholarship(s) that covers or exceeds educational expenses)
  • Be enrolled in a business or accounting program accredited for the entire 2022-23 academic year. The state board of accountancy must accept the program as qualifying as the educational requirements needed for CPA licensure in the state you intend to become licensed in OR in the state where your program is. 
  • Be willing to engage with the AICPA and provide feedback for developing the AICPA John L Carey Scholarship Award and other programs.

Note: The AICPA Association staff and their family members are not qualified to obtain this scholarship.

Background of AICPA John L Carey Scholarship

The AICPA John L Carey Scholarship in 1969 was founded by members of the accounting profession to honour John Carey upon his retirement from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). 

During his 40-year tenure at the institute, John L Carey worked as the administrative vice president; executive director; and editor and publisher of the Journal of Accountancy. He dedicated his whole career towards serving the accounting profession and put tremendous efforts into encouraging outstanding students to become CPAs.
