Zaporozhye State Medical University is a medical university in the small town of Zaporizhia, Ukraine. In 1973 the preparatory college for foreigners was opened. Since then, more than 3,500 students have been trained in other higher education institutions in Ukraine for higher education in medical and biological disciplines. The university has its own preventive treatment clinic and sports and health centre on the Azov Sea coast. The history of Zaporozhye State Medical University dates back to the Women's Pedagogical Courses organised in Odessa in 1903. In 1959 the Odessa Pharmaceutical Institute was transferred to Zaporizhia and renamed the Zaporizhia Pharmaceutical Institute and in 1968 the Zaporizhia Medical Institute. Zaporozhye State Medical University is a modern multi-profile higher education institution of the fourth level of accreditation with the right to autonomous administration. It is ranked at #5447 in the World and at #1348 in Europe.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The university has a sports complex that includes a stadium with athletics fields, a soccer field, handball, mini-football, volleyball and basketball courts. It has three gyms, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a shooting range, chess and draft club, and a gym. Student football matches are regularly held at the university. There are various circles of amateur activities for those who love to play musical instruments, sing and dance. There is a developed infrastructure of scientific units in the university, including SRI (Scientific Research Institute) of Medical and Ecological Affairs, Institute of Clinical Human Pathology, NVO "Pharmatron'' (Scientific Production Association), Educational Medical Laboratory Centre with Kindergarten, Laboratory Certification Tests of Perfume and Cosmetic Preparations and Household Products, Doctoral and Postgraduate Department, Editorial Department, Innovation and Technology Transfer Service, Metrology Service. The training system at Zaporozhye State Medical University includes pre-medical, medical and post-graduate training periods. The preparatory medical training is given in the preparatory department for foreign citizens. The education of foreign students and their subjects takes place in two subject areas, Medicine and Pharmacy. Some courses offered are Medicine, Paediatrics, Laboratory diagnostics, Nursing, and Pharmacy.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The first heart and liver transplants in Ukraine happened here, the first domestic knee joint prosthesis “Motor Sich EPK-1” also happened here. Various original household medicines like Thiotriazoline, Thioacetam, Thiodarone, Levotil, Amitril, Indotril, Carbatril are made here. Modern technologies of distance training of participants and advanced full-time distance training of doctors, pharmacists and professors of medical and pharmaceutical institutions of Ukraine happened here. Some of the notable alumni are Igor Artjushenko (Politician), Kostyantyn Leonidovych Kosyachenko (Pharmacist), Mykola Dotsenko (Physician). 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

As of September 1, 2021, 11,497 students, postgraduates, interns, refresher students, probationary teachers, master’s graduates and clinical residents are studying at the university. There are more than 3,200 foreign students from 42 countries at the university. 1,024 students are taught in English. The university has earned authority and recognition by educating foreigners from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe for more than 40 years. About 10,500 specialists have pharmaceutical education and today work in more than 100 countries around the world and hold senior positions in their countries' public health systems.
