History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in 1907, Tohoku University was formerly known as Tohoku Imperial University. In 1913, it became the first institute in Japan to accept female and international students and has had an “open-door” facility since its establishment. The Tohoku University has affiliations with APRU, Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU), HeKKSaGOn, T.I.M.E., and RENKEI. Tohoku University ranks #1 in the Times Higher Education in Japan.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Tohoku University has four main campuses in Sendai in Japan - Katahira, the administrative unit, Kawauchi has two sub-campuses North Kawauchi - the freshmen and sophomore of the undergraduates, and South Kawauchi offering law, economics, and education, Seiyro campus offering medicine and dentistry and Aobayama offering Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, Agriculture. Tohoku University has nine faculties - Faculty of Arts and Letters, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Agriculture.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Tohoku is one of the top research colleges in Japan. According to Thomson Reuters, Tohoku is the fourth-best research institute located in Japan. Its research excellence is especially distinctive in the areas of Materials Science, Physics, Pharmacology & Toxicology, and Chemistry. The notable alumni of the institute are - Hitoshi Oshitani (scientist, virologist, and public health expert), Tetsuo Nozoe (chemist, known for hinokitiol) and Tsutomu ?hashi (artist and scientist), Doctor of Agriculture.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The institute has a total of 20,000 students out of which about 11,000 are undergraduates, 7,700 are postgraduates at the institute with about 5,700 administrative staff. The institute has about 1,300 international students on campus. The male to female ratio is 72:28 at the institute. The visiting companies on the campus are Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.
