History, Affiliations and Rankings
Although Solent University has only been in existence since July 2005, it has a lengthy and complicated educational background in the UK. The University's roots may be traced back to a private School of Art founded in 1856, which was incorporated as an autonomous higher education institution in 1989. The roots for what is now Solent University were set through mergers between Southampton College of Art, Southampton College of Technology, and the College of Nautical Studies in Warsash. Since becoming a university, Solent has benefited approximately 50,000 students from all walks of life in realising their full potential. The University has transformed drastically during the last 10 years, guided by three Vice-Chancellors in turn, from campus upgrades to the newest state-of-the-art facilities. Solent has academic affiliations with Universities UK, GuildHE and MillionPlus. Solent University has been ranked 601-800 in THE World University Rankings 2021. Solent University is one of the top 30 universities in the UK for academic support, learning community and student voice as per the National Student Survey 2019. Further, it ranks at #120 in the Complete University Guide Rankings 2022 and 97 in The Guardian Rankings 2022. The university aims to create more employable graduates who are able to succeed in the fast-paced competitive world.
