History, Affiliations and Rankings

Although Solent University has only been in existence since July 2005, it has a lengthy and complicated educational background in the UK. The University's roots may be traced back to a private School of Art founded in 1856, which was incorporated as an autonomous higher education institution in 1989. The roots for what is now Solent University were set through mergers between Southampton College of Art, Southampton College of Technology, and the College of Nautical Studies in Warsash. Since becoming a university, Solent has benefited approximately 50,000 students from all walks of life in realising their full potential. The University has transformed drastically during the last 10 years, guided by three Vice-Chancellors in turn, from campus upgrades to the newest state-of-the-art facilities. Solent has academic affiliations with Universities UK, GuildHE and MillionPlus. Solent University has been ranked 601-800 in THE World University Rankings 2021. Solent University is one of the top 30 universities in the UK for academic support, learning community and student voice as per the National Student Survey 2019. Further, it ranks at #120 in the Complete University Guide Rankings 2022 and 97 in The Guardian Rankings 2022. The university aims to create more employable graduates who are able to succeed in the fast-paced competitive world.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

East Park Terrace is the main campus of Solent University, and it overlooks Southampton's beautiful East Park. On this campus, the majority of the buildings are grouped together. Solent University provides a variety of courses in the Arts, Design, and Fashion, as well as Law and Communication, Media Arts and Technology, Sports, Health, and Social Science. A total of 16-degree programmes are available through five academic schools, with about 11,000 students enrolled. Solent University's maritime courses are internationally recognised and considered among the best in the world. The courses are designed by expert professors to provide students with a unique, creative and quality learning experience.

Accomplishments and Alumni

Solent University is honoured to have garnered numerous accolades and honours for its teaching, facilities, and student experience. At the Times Higher Education Awards in 2015, the University earned the Most Improved Student Experience Award. The Small Faces Exhibition at Solent's Showcase Gallery earned the CIPR regional Pride Community Relations award in November 2017. Over 7,000 postcard-sized self-portraits were created by people of all ages and walks of life, ranging from 2 to 92, and every submission was shown in the exhibition. The award is based on student votes from the Student Experience Survey of Time Higher Education. In addition, Solent is home to some well-known people associated with them. It includes Paul Goodison (Olympic Athlete), David Quayle (British Businessman), Will Adkin (English Cricketer), Camille Lepage (French Photojournalist), Nick Spalding (British Novelist) among others.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

There are 5 academic schools that cater to over 11,000 students across the world. As the courses are created after extensive research into the business, students will have an easier time finding work after completing their studies. This improves the employability of fresh graduates and makes the job market more accessible to them. The university's mission is to offer graduates high-demand skills and increase their prospects of gaining employment. The Student Diversity Network at Solent University is passionate about equality, diversity, inclusion, and creating a better student experience for all. Their goal is to enable strategic-focused conversation and debate around Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Solent community, with participation and support from all aspects of university life. The major goal of the network is to welcome, inform, assist, and develop students who have similar social identities, as well as to create chances for more balanced perspectives, representation, and inclusive action across the campus.
