Founded by the Alberta provincial charter on December 16, 1910, Mount Royal University was originally named the Mount Royal College. It was started by George Kirby who wanted to increase the opportunities of higher education for the youth of rural houses in the area. This university was established in Canada as a result of a charter issued by the provincial government of Alberta. In 1931, it changed its name to Mount Royal Junior College, a post-secondary institution that provided transfer courses to the University of Alberta and then the University of Calgary. It moved its headquarters to a new site in Lincoln Park, which was formerly an air force installation, in 1972. This institution received its university status in the year 2009. It currently offers 12 degrees and 36 majors with an average class size of 32 students.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
The campus provides a large number of facilities to the students including baking, a bookstore, and child care. Computer labs, digital print centre, food services, lockers, performing arts centre, library and the sports centre. It is like a mini-city that is well-equipped just for the students. The faculty at Mount Royal University is highly rated by the students. The professors are knowledgeable, engaging and encouraging as well. The average class size at MRU is 320 students which allow each student to be supported and provided better attention. There are 12 degrees and 36 majors, all lying within the subjects of Art, Business, Communication, Science, Technology, etc. The credits from Mount Royal University can be transferred to the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.
Accomplishments & Alumni
The University received the Ashoka Changemaker Campus designation for being a leader in social innovation and change-making. More than 110,000 alumni from Mount Royal University are making changes around the globe. The university has produced well-known alumni, including Paul Brandt (Canadian Musical Artist), Kent Hehr (Canadian Politician), Alvin Law (Motivational Speaker), and John de Chastelain (Military Officer).

The University has students from a wide range of backgrounds, including race, national origin, religion, beliefs, age, socioeconomic level, gender, sexual orientation, and handicap status. The Career Services Centre at Mount Royal University ensures that the students have access to career-related services as and when they need it. Even after one graduate from MRU, they can avail of this support for up to 5 years. Some of the companies where graduates work is Alberta Health Services, Mount Royal University, TC Energy, Suncor, City of Calgary, etc.
