History, Affiliations and Rankings

Thomas Green Clemson, a Philadelphia-born, European-educated engineer, musician, and artist, established Clemson in 1889 through a donation. Gov. John Peter Richardson signed a bill recognising Clemson's contribution in November 1889, establishing the Clemson Agricultural College and making its trustees keepers of Morrill Act and Hatch Act money, which were allocated by federal legislative acts for agricultural education and research. In 1964, the university became Clemson University, with academic offerings and research interests. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has granted Clemson University accreditation to offer baccalaureate, master's, education specialist, and doctorate degrees. Sea-grant has an academic association with the institution. Clemson University secured the ranking of #801-1000 in QS World University Rankings. U.S. News and World Report ranked the University at #75 in National Universities (tie), #43 in Best Colleges for Veterans (tie) and #48 in Best Undergraduate Teaching (tie).

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Clemson University is a prestigious public research university in South Carolina's Upstate. It sits on 1,400 acres, with one end of the campus bordering Lake Hartwell and the other deep in the Experimental Forest. Clemson University is located halfway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, and gives students the convenience of a small town with easy access to large city attractions. The facilities on campus include cafes, gyms, libraries, restaurants and parks. The University offers 78 distinct undergraduate degrees, concentrated into 67 majors within 24 broad fields of study. The most popular majors include Business Administration and Management, Biology/Biological Sciences, Psychology, Marketing, Mechanical Engineering; Finance, Accounting; Computer and Information Sciences. 

Accomplishments and Alumni 

Dr John Limroth, the nation's first PhD in automotive engineering, graduated from the university, as did the nation's first female PhD in automotive engineering (Dr Ala Qattawi). The Graduate Automotive Technology or GATE section of the Department of Energy awarded Clemson's automotive engineering programme a $1 million competitive prize. These monies were used to build a sustainable transportation systems research and education centre. The efforts to become a model of institutional sustainability are coordinated through the university. The commission fosters collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and the community to address sustainability by combining education, research, and public service with the social, economic, and environmental infrastructure. The university has 35,000 graduates across the globe. Some of the notable names are Strom Thurmond, Former Governor of South Carolina, Nancy O'Dell, an American television host and Gaines Adams, an American football player.

Clemson University is where more than 4,600 undergraduate students conduct advanced research every year, upperclassmen take on mentorship roles, and people from across the world form friendships that last a lifetime. Nearly 1,300 students study abroad each year.  There are a total of 21,653 undergraduate students enrolled at the university. Clemson University's Business Division JobLink is a member of the world's largest network of job centres for college students and graduates.
