Morehead Planetarium and Science Center

For a unique hangout experience, you can visit the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. They offer educational shows, planetarium exhibits, and stargazing events, providing an opportunity to learn and have fun with friends.

Approximately one-third of Morehead’s funding is derived from state sources, with another one-third generated through ticket and gift sales. The remaining one-third is obtained through generous donations and grants.

Originally established in 1949, the planetarium served as a training ground for astronauts participating in the Gemini and Apollo programs, helping them master celestial navigation techniques.

At that time, it housed one of the most substantial functional Copernican orreries globally until the late 1990s.

The facility was generously donated to the university by John Motley Morehead III, an alumnus who made a significant investment of over $3 million (24.57 crore INR) towards its development. This amount converts to approximately $40 million (327.68 crore INR) in today’s dollars.

During the period spanning 1959 to 1975, astronauts participating in the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz Test Project programs underwent extensive celestial navigation training at the planetarium. To facilitate this training, technicians at Morehead developed simplified versions of flight modules and tools, often using materials like plywood or cardboard.

Notably, a mockup of crucial sections of the Gemini capsule, constructed from plywood and affixed to a barber chair capable of adjusting pitch and yaw, was created. Some of these training materials are currently exhibited at the planetarium. This rigorous training regimen potentially played a role in safeguarding the lives of astronauts in critical situations.
