Q- Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Children between the ages of 5 and 18 should not be allowed to listen to sexually explicit songs. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Do not use memorized examples.

Ans: I wholeheartedly agree with the assertion that children from 5 to 18 should not be permitted to listen to sexually explicit music. I would like to elaborate on this by providing three reasons.

Although it is great that children now have access to all of the world’s information, the entire paradigm shift can impede a child’s development and overall social growth by exposing children to the negative side of the iceberg known as the internet. As mobile devices such as smartphones, computers, and tablets have become a staple commodity in every household today, children have become more susceptible to sensitive information that they should not be exposed to in the first place. A child’s mind, during their growing years, is no more different than clay, which means it can be moulded in whatever way is desired. Just imagine the implications a child’s overall psyche will incur after getting exposed to songs that are sexually explicit and violent. It indeed will have a detrimental effect on a child’s mind, which can pose several issues for them once they grow up.

In a country like India, where sex is still considered taboo and little education is provided on the subject, children who are exposed to sexually explicit songs at a young age will perceive sex as a spectacle of lust and desire rather than a natural occurrence that is spiritually beautiful. As a result, these children will grow up to be individuals who objectify women and consider women as simple objects to be used to gratify or satiate one’s sexual urges. With an already increasing prevalence of sexual crimes against women in society, I believe that sexually explicit information, mainly songs, should be prohibited from being shown to children. Instead, they should be educated and made aware of sex. In this approach, children will begin to perceive sex as normal as eating and breathing, and they will become more sensitized and receptive to the topic. There is a pressing requirement for sex education not only in India but also around the world, to de-stigmatize the negative connotation and taboo attributed to sex.

Furthermore, I believe it is the responsibility of parents and guardians to monitor the content their children consume on a daily basis on their mobile devices. That being said, sexually explicit songs and content should not be shown to children, who are more prone to forming their worldviews based on what they consume as content. If in case, a child is exposed to such content or information, I think the best way to approach such a sensitive issue is by making them understand what sex actually is. This way, they will be sensitized towards the topic and be educated enough to perceive it as something natural rather than as it is depicted in adult content.
