Study Abroad: That’s How The International Students Day Was Celebrated

Council of International Students and Organizations (COISO) under the Department of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) hosts the International Dance Competition every year. Their main aim is to encourage friendships, show respect for cultural dance etc.

The competition showcased various cultures and countries performing their unique dance steps on Thursday (16th November) night on the Lakeside Patio, Miami. The co-sponsored for this event are Student Activities and Student Organizations, Student Affairs, Student Government and Hurricane Production.

Study Abroad: That’s How The International Students Day Was Celebrated

Love of Chinese Korean and Eastern Dances (LOCKED) performed in this event and they’re the only K-Pop dance team at the University of Miami. 

This dance team took part in the competition to express their passion for Korean Pop culture. As are the current champions, they were keen and determined to defend their title. 

This Event was co-chaired by undergraduates Ju An Chen and Laura Garcia. Disco Fever was this year’s theme for the event. It was in hopes of creating a lovely and unforgettable experience for the international students. One person who really helped the student duo coordinate the competition was Claudia Anderson, associate director of international services.

All the dance groups really gave their best performnace and their energy was high as the audience motivated them on. The Judges in this competition were Stephanie Nunez, assistant director of the office of Multicultural Student Affairs; Ana Rendon, senior assistant director of ISS; and Wyatt Waterbury, residential life coordinator.

LOCKED’s K-pop dance team won the first-place title with a $150 cash reward; Hurricane Bhangra, a Punjabi folk dance team, were ranked at second place and won $100; and UTaal, a classical Indian dance group, were ranked at third place and won $75.

History of International Students’ Day

International Students’ Day is celebrated on November 17 every year. This day is celebrated on the anniversary of the Nazi invasion of a university in Prague in 1939.
