Study Abroad: New Rules Announced for Study Permit by Canada More Checks for International Students

Canada has always been the most preferred country to study by international students. Canada has announced some new rules regarding study permits for international students with effect from 1st January 2024. As per the new rules the new online portals have been launched for DLIs (Designated Learning Institutions) to verify letters of acceptance submitted by foreign students to support their student applications. DLIs are required to validate the letter of acceptance within ten days. Failed verification will lead to the cancellation of the student visa application.

As per the new rules, DLIs are required to verify the LOAs within ten days. This is important as it will help in maintaining the integrity of Canada’s education system, and will also ensure that only genuine students get admission into the colleges of Canada.

Outcomes of Non-Verification

If the authorities fail to verify the LOA of the students within ten days then this will lead to cancellation of student visa application. However, in this case, the students will be returned the application fees. 

Reduce Fraudulent Practices in International Education

These measures have been implemented based on some previous instances of fraudulent practices that happened within the Canadian education system. For example, Immigration consultants have been issuing false letters of acceptance to the students. To avoid this Canadian authorities have taken such measures to uphold the country’s reputation and protect the interests of genuine students.

New Application Form for Study Permit

With effect from 1st December 2023, the new application form (IMM1294) has been implemented for study permit applications. Candidates using their IRCC account have to mandatorily use this application form. Post this date old application forms will not be accepted.
