Indian students aspiring to study in Australia must know the updated visa rules starting this month. On 23rd March 2024, Australia imposed strict visa rules for international students. The eligibility criteria for English language proficiency tests for student and graduate visa applications have been raised. In addition, the Australian government has the authority to restrict educational institutions from enlisting international students to persistently violate regulations. Revised Langauge Proficiency Standards

Applicants for a Temporary Graduate Visa will now require an IELTS score of 6.5 from 6.0. However, those applying for a student visa will require a minimum score of 6.0. 

Increased Financial Proof Requirements

The financial requirements for student visa applications have also increased. From now on the individuals must have at least $24505 which is a 17 percent increase from previous levels. 

Genuine Temporary Entrant is replaced by Genuine Student Visa Requirement

From now on new criteria known as the Genuine Student requirement will now assess the candidates more closely to know their intentions behind pursuing education in Australia. Factors such as academic progression, course selection, previous immigration history, and compliance with visa conditions will be evaluated. A new Genuine Student Test has also been introduced to replace the Genuine Temporary Entrant. This will filter out applications of students who are not coming to Australia for genuine academic goals.

As per the data given by the government, 100009 Indian students were present in Australia in 2022. In 2019, 73808 Indian students went to Australia on student visas, 33629 in the year 2020, and 8950 in 2021. However, it is expected that changes in the visa rules can negatively affect the acceptance rate of the visa application for Indian students.
