TUM offers scholarships to international students funded by the Bavarian government. These scholarships provide one-time financial support ranging from €500 to €1,800 per semester. Students may reapply for the scholarship each semester.

Documents Required for Scholarship in Technical University of Munich Application

• Proof of Income
  • The relevant periods are the winter term (April 1st – September 30th) and the summer term (October 1st – March 31st).
  • If statements are not in German or English, a certified German translation by a sworn translator with an official seal is required.
  • For all incoming payments, please clearly indicate the source of the funds directly on the bank statement (e.g., salary, parental support, scholarship, loan).
  • Please provide additional supporting documents as applicable (e.g., employment contract, internship agreement, scholarship award letter, loan agreement, BAföG notification).

Waiver Scholarship Guidelines for International Student Tuition Fees

From the winter semester of 2024 and 2025, the Technical University of Munich will charge tuition fees for international students from non-EEA (European Economic Area) countries. To help you with these costs, TUM has Waiver Scholarships that cover the tuition fees for high-performing students. Moreover, these merit-based scholarships are available for students enrolling in both Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. Additionally, the scholarships usually waive tuition fees for two semesters, with the possibility of re-application​. 

Purpose of the Scholarship

The purpose of the waiver scholarship is to support talented people and those facing economic challenges by waiving tuition fees for international students.

• This is implemented as it aligns with the socially responsible execution of tuition fees as per the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act.

Eligibility

There are two types of Waiver scholarships available, merit-based and need-based. Here is the eligibility for both types along with the conditions. 

• Merit-Based Scholarships:
  • Available to Bachelor’s students from the third semester.
  • Merit is assessed according to academic performance and special achievements.

• Need-Based Scholarships: 
  • Available to students facing financial hardships.
  • Financial needs are assessed based on personal and family financial circumstances.

• Conditions:
  • Scholarships take effect upon enrollment.
  • Scholarships do not apply to semesters outside the award period.
  • Merit-based and need-based scholarships cannot be combined.
