Q. Some people believe laws change human behaviour. Do you agree with it?
Ans. The belief that laws tend to change the behaviour of people is a point that I agree with. They help in forming boundaries, a code of conduct, so that one can be accepted in society.
One of the ways through which it makes an impact on human behaviour is deterrence. Laws impose penalties on people who do not follow them or if the crime is serious it also leads to imprisonment. The fear of these laws, such as penalties for drunk driving, refrains people from committing offences that may happen otherwise. In addition to this, laws also shape societal values and norms which further influence individual attitudes and beliefs. This can be seen from the inclusivity and cultural respect that have resulted from laws prohibiting discrimination based on race, gender, and sexual orientation.
Moreover, laws help to spread awareness among people regarding the importance of sustainable practices and encourage the adoption of eco-friendly behaviour in businesses and individuals. Laws related to public health such as mandating vaccinations or wearing masks at the time of COVID-19 highlight the importance of these measures to protect the lives of people.
To conclude, laws do play an important role in shaping human behaviour by setting societal standards, preventing negative behaviour, shaping society, and raising awareness about important issues. However, for a society to work properly it is vital to understand the internalization of these laws. True behavioural change is most effective when it is driven by an individual’s understanding and acceptance of these laws.
