History of World Rivers Day
According to the founder of World Rivers Day, Mark Angelo, “Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are the lifelines in the truest sense.”
In 2005, the UN launched the Water for Life decade. This was done to create awareness among the public about the need for care of water resources. Mark Angelo initiated a moment to clean the Thompson River in British Columbia in September 1980 and its success was marked as BC Rivers Day. Following BC Rivers Day, a number of river enthusiasts gathered to organize the inauguration of WRD. Thus, in 2005, the UN recognized and accepted the proposal of Mark Angelo as it was a fruitful event for the conservation and protection of water bodies, and from that day fourth Sunday of every September is celebrated as World Rivers Day.
