Early Life

Shiva Thapa started boxing at an early age, when his father Padam Thapa who was a karate instructor in Guwahati encouraged him to pick up Karate. When his father got to know that karate was not an Olympic sport, he enrolled Shiva into boxing.

Shiva followed a regimented life since the age of six – he used to wake up at 3 a.m., run for 3 km, and do endurance and strength exercises like push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups. He used to go to Ulubari Boxing Club in Assam along with his elder brother, after which they used to attend school.

His professional boxing career started in 2005 at the sub-junior National Boxing Championship in Noia, UP. He wanted to participate in the 36kg category, but due to some misunderstanding, he had to participate in the 38kg category, for which he had to drink a lot of water. Surprisingly, he won the National Championship by defeating the Services Champion.
