History

The Jesuits founded this Indian school, which is named after Jesuit Saint St. Francis Xavier. Saint Ignatius of Loyola founded the Jesuits, an all-male Catholic religious order. The San Souci theatre, located at 30 Park Street (now Mother Teresa Sarani), Kolkata-700016, was destroyed by fire in 1843. The current campus was built on land purchased by Jesuits from Belgium. The motto of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School Park Street, “Nihil Ultra” (Latin for “Nothing Beyond”), as well as the college crest, date from the rectorship of Fr. O’Neill, S.J., 1904-1913. The school is divided into two buildings by an intersection. One building houses the primary section (preschool through class 5) and the other houses the secondary section (Class 6 to 12). The current imposing five-story building was constructed between 1934 and 1940 at a cost of Rs 9 lakhs, which was funded in part by the Calcutta public, in part by Belgian assistance, and in part by the enormous rental received from the American army that occupied the building during World War II. The school’s expansion has been a long process, with a campus planned for Salt Lake City, Kolkata, and a second boys’ hostel not far from the current one.
