‘Hello and welcome to all my teachers are students present here. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on feminism. In recent years, feminism has gained a lot of popularity through its social media presence, public demonstrations and mass movements, and official statements by learned men and women.’
Malala Yousafzai, A Pakistani female education activist once said, ‘There are two powers in the world; one is the sword and the other is the pen. There is a third power stronger than both, that of women.’ Malala is just one of the thousand women out there who are fighting for gender equality, where they seek equal rights for women in all spheres. This is what feminism is about.
There is a very popular myth about feminism, that it stands against men. Feminism is not against men or anyone, rather it is for the upliftment of women. Gender and sexist oppressions have always governed the lives of women. Women were always seen as objects of exploitation, they were considered second-class citizens and were not allowed to leave the premises without the permission of the man of their house.
All four waves of feminism and movements have been instrumental in achieving legal reforms that address gender-based discrimination. This includes legislation on equal pay, reproductive rights, domestic violence, and sexual harassment. To achieve all the goals, access to education is very important, which will allow us to break down barriers that limit the academic opportunities for women.
In our Lok Sabha Assembly, there are only 78 women out of the total 542 members. We need to promote gender equality in every sphere, be it at school or administration. Putting women in leadership positions will offer diverse perspectives, improved organizational performance, market responsiveness and representation, and role modeling.
