Solutions
1. Yes, this statement gives a clue about the background of the story. It hints that the story takes place after a war, and many people either died or did not return to their homes. The woman’s surprise on seeing the narrator shows that she thought the narrator’s family had not survived the war. This line gives us an idea that the narrator has returned after a long time, and something tragic must have happened in the past, especially during the war. It sets the mood of the story and makes the reader curious about what happened before.
2. In the pre-war period, the girl lived peacefully with her family. Her mother had a beautiful home with many valuable belongings. But in the post-war period, everything changed for her. She faced many hard times, like:
- Losing family: Her mother died in the war, and the rest of the family got separated.
- Moving away: She had to leave her home and live somewhere else, maybe hiding.
- Feeling sad and scared: She felt pain and fear because of the war and losing her loved ones.
- Trying to start again: After the war, she tried to find her mother’s things and her old life, but it was very hard and disappointing.
3. The narrator wanted to forget the address because it reminded her of the painful past and her mother’s death during the war. When she visited the house at the address her mother had once given her, she saw her mother’s belongings being used by someone else.
