Doon School History

The founder of the Doon School, S.R Das, earned his educational qualification at Manchester Grammar School in 1515 England. After returning to India, where he worked as the Advocate General of Bengal and a member of Lord Irwin’s Viceroy’s Executive Council, he decided to build and start an Indian boys-only private boarding school that would be modelled after British private boarding schools. He desired for them to have access to the same learning opportunities at Manchester Grammar as he had, but without having to leave their home country.

The Doon School was intended to be an all-secular institution that would draw boys from all spheres of Indian society and from every state. Boys who would later serve a free and democratic India were the focus of the Doon School’s education programme. Arthur Foot, a science teacher from Eton College, served as the school’s first headmaster. John Martyn, his deputy and a Housemaster from Harrow, went on to become the school’s second headmaster.

Currently housing about 500 boys between the ages of 12 and 18, the school was founded in 1935 as an all-boarding establishment. The original site of the Forestry Research Institute of India is located in Dehradun and is spread out over 70 acres. Admission

• Eleven Plus: For each entry point, The Doon School has a rigid age requirement. A candidate must be older than 11 and younger than 12 in September of the year that he takes the exam in order to be admitted to Class VII (D Form).
• Twelve Plus: A candidate must be beyond the age of 12 and under the age of 13 in September of the year he takes the exam in order to be admitted to Class VIII (C Form). Boys are welcome to retake the admissions test in Class VIII if they failed it the first time in Class VII, but they are also welcome to take the test for the first time in Class VIII. For the seats available, all boys compete on an equal basis.

The boys are expected to prepare themselves as early as possible. They should have a deep interest in not only academics but also in extracurricular activities music, dance, art or sport to name a few. 

There are numerous centres in India, including those in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Calcutta. The majority of applicants from all around India and the world pick to attend the school itself.
