The full form of DNA is Deoxyribonucleic Acid. DNA was identified by the Swiss researcher Johannes Friedrich Miescher while working on white blood cells in 1896. DNA is a collection of molecules that play the function of carrying and transporting genetic information and inherited materials from parents to their offspring. DNA is an organic compound with a  distinctive molecular makeup. DNA is present in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. The double helix structure of DNA molecules was given by James Watson and Francis Crick. This established that DNA carries and handles the genetic data in a person.

What are the Types of DNA?

The following are the types of DNA:


It is a right-handed DNA and dehydrated DNA is assumed to be the form of an A that preserves the DNA molecule under active conditions such as protein binding and desiccation and also removes the DNA solvent. 


DNA is the most common shape in the form of a B, a right-handed helix. Provided under normal physiological settings, a majority of the DNA types are B shape.


Z DNA was discovered by Alexander Rich and Andres Wang. It is a left-handed DNA in which the double helix is coiled towards the left in a zigzag manner. It is found ahead of the beginning location of a gene and thus, is believed to play a role in gene regulation.

What is the Importance of DNA?

The following depicts the importance of DNA:

  • DNA is made up of nitrogen-based building blocks. The DNA stores all of the inherited information
  • DNA carries the genetic information from one generation to another ( from one cell to its daughters)
  • The DNA sequence of every person is unique and does not match other people. This characteristic of DNA is used in the method of DNA fingerprinting techniques for identifying a person 
  • DNA also affects cellular metabolism with the use of enzymes, hormones and certain RNAs
