What is the Full Form of CLAT?

CLAT full form is Common Law Admission Test. CLAT is a consolidated national-level government entrance examination, for the purpose of studying law in esteemed institutions. The law entrance examination is administered to admit students, who pass CLAT with high-ranking scores, to 22 national law universities across India. But that’s not all. Apart from government-led law universities, CLAT is also used by most privately funded universities, and self-financed law schools in India. Students can take CLAT to enrol in integrated UG programmes in law universities, after their 12th graduation, or LLM (Law for Master of Laws) degree, after undergraduate completion.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for CLAT?

The eligibility criteria for CLAT, a law entrance examination, is divided into undergraduate and postgraduate. We have shared the same below. 

Undergraduate Programmes 

The undergraduate degree offered in a law university can be LLB. The eligibility criteria for CLAT for the same are:

  1. The student must have completed their education at 10+2 level from a recognised board.  
  2. The student must have scored at least 45% in their senior secondary board examination. For SC/ST category, 40% is required.
  3. The student must be an Indian citizen. 
  4. In case the student is yet to appear for the Class 12 examination, they can still apply for CLAT, given they provide proof of passing the examination at the time of admission.

Postgraduate Programmes 

The undergraduate degree offered in a law university can be LLM. The eligibility criteria for CLAT for the same are:

  1. The student must have an LLB degree from a recognised university.
  2. The student must have scored a minimum of 55% in their LLB degree. For SC/ST category, 50% is required. 
  3. The student must be an Indian citizen.
