The full form of NCP is Nationalist Congress Party. It is a significant part in Maharashtra, Nagaland and other states, and it is, therefore, one of the state parties in India. The party is known for supporting Gandhian Secularism and Indian Nationalism.
NCP Formation
NCP was formed on 10 June 1999 by Tariq Anwar, P.A. Sangma and Sharad Pawar. It was founded as a result of the fact that the above-mentioned founders of the party were expelled from the Indian National Congress for challenging the idea of a person of Italian origin – Sonia Gandhi leading the party. As the NCP was formed, Indian Congress (Socialist) – Sarat Chandra Sinha party merged with it.
Despite the fact that NCP was formed as a result of opposing Sonia Gandhi, it came into coalition with the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in October 1999 to form the Government of Maharashtra. In 2004, again NCP joined UPA in order to form the national government as a result of which Sharad Pawar got to serve as the Minister of Agriculture for both the 5-year tenure of Manmohan Singh led Government. NCP remained a part of the Congree-led Maharashtra State Government until the year 2014.
Ideology of NCP
As per the statement of Mumbai President of the NCP – Nawab Malik, the party holds the idea of reunification of India meaning that India, Bangladesh and Pakistan should become one country. The Mumbai President compared this to German reunification saying that “If the Berlin wall can be demolished then why not India, Pakistan and Bangladesh come together?”
When it comes to general ideology, NCP is known for believing in Indian Nationalism and Gandhian Secularism.

Party Symbol
NCP’s election symbol is an analogue alarm clock which is situated on a tri-coloured Indian flag. The clock is drawn in blue colour and entails an alarm button and two legs.
