History of Humayun Tomb
Humayun’s Tomb was commissioned by Bega Begum, the first wife of the Mughal Emperor, in 1565. The architectural work of the tomb was supervised by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, who was known for his expertise in designing grand mausoleums. The construction of the tomb began in 1565 and was completed in 1572. It is said to have laid the foundation for the grandeur of Mughal architecture in India.

Bega Begum also known as Haji Begum not only provided the financial resources for the project but also oversaw the design and execution of the tomb. Bega Begum’s vision for the mausoleum was to create a fitting tribute to her beloved husband, Humayun.
Mirak Mirza Ghiyas brought in elements of Persian and Indian architecture to create a unique masterpiece that stands tall even today. The intricate marble work, the symmetrical layout, and the lush gardens surrounding the tomb all boast the amazing architectural power of the Mughals. The fort is believed to have been built at a cost of a whopping 1.5 million rupees.
Lately, the tomb has been converted into a family burial ground for people of the Royal Family. Currently, around 150 graves are housed inside the tomb and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
